Announcements

4th February 2009: The Freedom Chat Lab Administrator Tool sources were added to the site.

30th August 2008: As of now, the Freedom Chat project is officially open source. I no longer have a desire to develop the FC client anymore because I am working on some more advanced accessibility projects at this time. THerefore I have decided to release all the sources for the project publicly under terms of the GNU General Public License. You can download and explore the sources (they are for Visual Basic 6.0) and create derivitive works as long as you release those works under the GPL as well. This also is my official announcement that all development on this particular codebase is done for good on my part. If someone else can do something useful with it, go for it! Thanks to all who helped the FC project and who contributed to its success during its time. The Freedom Chat network is now the TalkingIRC network and can be found at http://www.talkingirc.net.

9th September 2006: As of now, the Freedom Chat client is officially depricated! This means that the client will no longer be actively supported or further developed. The present version is being provided solely as a transition aid to your use of a more capable software program. We highly recommend tIRC, a set of scripts for mIRC that enable it to work with JAWS for Windows and Window-Eyes. For more information visit www.talkingirc.net. As of now, no further support inquiries and feature requests for the Freedom Chat client will be considered. It is now being provided as-is to users to ease the transition to a better system.

Also, as of now, the Freedom Chat Network is now once again known as TalkingIRC. All support inquiries related to the network (not to the Freedom Chat client program!) should be directed to the new E-mail address, irc@talkingirc.net.

This is a reminder: Do not uninstall previous versions of Freedom Chat before installing new ones. If you do uninstall a previous version, your settings and other information may be removed. Simply run the installer of the new version of Freedom Chat and it will update your copy to the latest version without disturbing any of your settings.

Introduction

Welcome to the home of Freedom Chat!

Freedom Chat is an easy-to-use Internet Relay Chat program for blind and visually impaired users! Using Freedom Chat, you can join in a wonderful community of people from all over the world and meet new friends!

Using Freedom Chat, you can connect with and chat with people from all over the world! Most of our community consists of blind or visually impaired people, but we welcome sighted users just as well. In fact, Freedom Chat doesn't even require you to use a speech synthesizer if you don't want to - it works equally well for a sighted user and even includes a Large Print mode for those who use large print!

Freedom Chat supports speech output via either JAWS for Windows, Window-Eyes, or Microsoft's SAPI. It's designed specifically to work well with scren readers while still maintaining an easy-to-use GUI for sighted users. Freedom Chat's speech system will automatically read important information and chat messages as they arrive!

Freedom Chat's network is an IRC-based network. This means that you're more than welcome to connect to Freedom Chat with a program other than Freedom Chat itself. Scroll down this page and you'll find the IRC Address and port that you can use if you wish to connect to the network using another program such as mIRC, Epic, or others.

If you wish to connect to the Freedom Chat Network using an alternate IRC client (e.g. mIRC, Epic, etc.), you can do so by connecting your client to: irc.freedomchat.org port 6667. Visit the Freedom Chat Network web site for network-specific information.

Keep in mind that Freedom Chat's motto is "Freedom!" Our chat network is not censored and discussions are not restricted. We promote freedom of speech. Thus, the possibility exists that people may be discussing things you may deem inappropriate or offensive. Keep this in mind while you're chatting, and if you simply can't handle a discussion, just leave the channel. Thanks!

IMPORTANT! After you download and install Freedom Chat, you should visit the Patches and Updates section. These are very simple to install; follow the steps provided in the Patches and Updates section carefully.

Patches and Updates

Often, bugs and security issues are discovered in the software that require an immediate fix. In such a case, we will not release a full upgrade. In this section, you will find small update files (commonly known as "patches") that you should install over your current version of Freedom Chat to apply any bug fixes they may contain. Please see the Change Log to see what these fixes may be.

IMPORTANT! Please ensure you have the version specified in the patch before attempting to update it. For example, if a patch says "Version 1.6.5 to 1.7 Update", you must be running version 1.6.5, and not any version prior to it, in order to use the patch. Attempting to update other versions will result in an update failure. If no patch is offered for your current version, you will need to download the full installation again.
